Red Bull Flying Bach is turning the worlds of classical music and breakdancing upside down this year. Top kick it all off, Red Bull Flying Steps conquered the former Plenary Chamber in Bonn...

Head spins set to the sounds of a piano, power moves following the rhythm of Bach’s fugues: This year, the ultimate culture clash is ready to take centre stage in Europe as Berlin’s four-time breakdancing world champions, the Flying Steps, kick off the Red Bull Flying Bach European Tour with dates in Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria and Turkey.

The tour started in Bonn's Former Plenary Chamber of the German Parliament - today the World Conference Center Bonn - on August 19, 2011.

With Red Bull Flying Bach, opera director Christoph Hagel and breakdance legends Flying Steps and have fused B-boying with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, performing modern dance moves to Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier.

The 70-minute show, which was first performed at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie last year and picked up the ECHO Klassik Sonderpreis, blends serious music and youth culture with visuals and a storyline.

“In former attempts to join classical music and breakdance, the B-boys just supported the music with their moves. For Red Bull Flying Bach, we are not only dancing, we are visualising and reviving Bach’s notes,” says Vartan Bassil, founder of the Flying Steps and award-winning choreographer.

“With the Red Bull Flying Bach European Tour we have the opportunity to present our work to a broader audience around the world. We absolutely want to fascinate each crowd and each country with our art. On top of it, we want to create a certain level of understanding between high culture and urban art, between classically trained music lovers and young guys.”

Flying Bach will continue playing 12 cities in five countries and in some extraordinary locations including the Concert Hall of the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, the Schiffbau in Zurich and Vienna’s famous Burgtheater before heading to Istanbul and Ankara in Turkey.
